Snow

Didn't see a lick of it.

Bugs

Got one bite on way down. Nothing significant.

Weather

Not hot/pleasant hiking. Summit clear. Partly Cloudy.

Crowds The only person I saw on the way up I caught at Talus/Trail fork. Followed him a bit then passed him as he briefly stopped and then the summit gear kicked in and made the summit in short order. Saw a couple of other guys going up on my way down. One couple lost ~ .3 miles past Balcony fork. They turned around (later saw them at balcony when I was leaving). Saw a few rock climber types near parking lot.
Scenic Value Summit views now partially blocked by trees. To West/north west blocked also by the unnamed peak between Dirty Harry's and Mailbox. Can not see Mailbox. Best views out to east/one of Granite lakes and across that valley.
Difficulty A pure hike. Other than occasionally having to walk through part of the now shallow creek, and be road bed rocky in places, not difficult at all. No route finding difficulties. It is pretty straightforward if you get the fork right. Just follow the road/trail to the summit. Becomes more a trail and a bit steeper as you close in on the summit but nothing serious. ,

Basic Route Info:

  Dirty Harry's peak/balcony route.

Narrative:

Well Dirty Harry's was one I had never attempted. Was a bit unsure about possible route confusion based on some internet reports. At any rate arrived at the parking lot below the Fire Training center. I opted to park outside as the gates close at 4PM and I wasn't sure how much goofing around I would be doing.

Parking area outside gate of Fire Training Center.

After a short walk up the road to Fire Training Center you find the trailhead. The old TNAB waypoint was spot on.

Start of Dirty Harry's Trail. Just after start of Dirty Harry's trai. Hiking only 365 days a year.

The grade is pretty constant, not too serious but uphill nonetheless. Cross an old crappy bridge to soon meet the Balcony/Summit fork.

Eroding Bridge on lower portion of Dirty Harry's trail. I took the rocky right plank. For in Dirty Harry Trail. Straight (right) to balcony. Head left for peak. Fork at Dirty Harry's trail, onward left to the peak.

After about 1/3 mile you get a few nice lookout views to the south.

Views maybe .3 miles after turnoff for Dirty Harry's peak. Views maybe .3 miles after turnoff for Dirty Harry's peak. Perhaps the best view of McClellan Butte maybe .33 miles pas turnoff for Dirty Harry's Peak. Perhaps the best view of McClellan Butte (zoom view) maybe .33 miles pas turnoff for Dirty Harry's Peak.

Not much more soon reaching Creek near the Museum which is nothing from the trail.

Dirty Harry's Creek crossing just before Dirty Harry's museum. Dirty Harry's museum area. Hmmm... Nothing here. Dirty Harry's museum area. Hmmm... Nothing here. Dirty Harry's museum area. Hmmm... Nothing here. I think the museum is somewhere on the uphill side up a bit but didn't explore. Dirty Harry's museum area. Hmmm... Nothing here. I think the museum is somewhere on the uphill side up a bit but didn't explore.

Another junction then the Talus/Trail split.

Dirty Harry's trail fork of sorts. Right kind of blocked off and goes to a marsh/wet area. Correct route is left up a few rocks then back on regular trail. Dirty Harry's trail fork of sorts. Right kind of blocked off and goes to a marsh/wet area. Correct route is left up a few rocks then back on regular trail. Dirty Harry trail options (vs talus). Trail starts up pretty wet with very shallow water running over it.

Few more shots before summit.

Dirty Harry talus field just past left turnoff (talus/trail choice). Hiker ahead on upper portion of Dirty Harry's trail. I would later go by him. Beargrass on upper portion of Dirty Harry's peak trail. Sneak view on upper portion of Dirty Harry's peak trail. Flower on upper portion of Dirty Harry's peak trail.

Summit arrival. Obligatory shots of the log/view down.

Dirty Harry's peak summit. I never knew Clint Eastwood climbed this peak? As you will see this summit does not provide a good 360 degree open view due to blockage by mountains and trees growing up. Best views out to East/NE DIrty Harry's summit. One of Granite lakes visible below.

A One of Granite Lakes off to east (other to right not visible from here).

Dirty Harry's summit looking easterly. One of Granite lakes visible below. Very small snow patch on west end of lake. Granite lake shot from Dirty Harry's peak summit. Granite lake zoom shot from Dirty Harry's peak summit.

It's a long way down (~1700 feet to lake).....Hard to get the effect in this photo.

It's a long way straight down from Dirty Harry's summit. Probably about 1600-1700 feet.

Views around the horn where you can see something.

VIews northeast up the valley from Dirty Harry's peak summit. Views east from Dirty Harry's peak summit. Someone live up there? Views east from Dirty Harry's peak summit. Someone live up there? After some lunch headed back down to check out the balcony.

Logging junk on way to Dirty Harry's Balcony. This must be Dirty Harry's balcony, or I deemed that my destination. A worthy destination anyway. Views from Dirty Harry's balcony. Views of McClellan Butte from Dirty Harry's balcony. Views up I-90 corridor from Dirty Harry's balcony. Views from Dirty Harry's balcony. Iron Horse trail from Dirty Harry's balcony. Views from Dirty Harry's balcony.

After a brief snack stop on the balcony headed back down and not too much later was back on the Fire Training Center road and back at the car.

View looking south easy on way down Fire training center road. Trail just on north side of bridge. I think this leads to rock climbing destinations as I saw people with helmets in the parking area and the map indicates so. River Crossing inside Fire training center. Sign on exit of Fire training center.

All in all a great/no event hike. Is this hike on my top 10 list? No mainly because of the lack of summit views. The views from the balcony aren't far off from what you see on the summit other than being able to look right down to Granite Lake. This however an easy access hike and easy to follow with good trail and may be an alternative to other overly crowded I-90 corridor hikes.
